Are The Catalina Island Deer All Going To Be Killed?
The Caavakushi team has heard about a chilling development on the shores of Southern California. Most people see Catalina Island as a serene getaway. But we’ve found that for the Catalina island deer, it’s about to become a killing field. In early 2026, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) officially greenlit a plan that has left the vegan community and many local residents in absolute shock.
Extradition Agenda
The Caavakushi team feels it is essential to call this what it is: a state-sanctioned massacre. The Catalina Island Conservancy has been granted a permit to systematically eliminate the island’s entire mule deer population—estimated at roughly 2,000 individuals—over a multi-year period beginning in 2026 (Our source: SFGATE).
We’ve noticed that while the Conservancy uses the buzzword “restoration” to justify the slaughter, the goal is total population removal. We think it’s heartbreaking that animals who have called the island home for over 100 years are suddenly being treated as disposable pests.
The Scope Of The Slaughter
– 2,000 Deaths: The number of deer targeted for complete removal to protect native flora (Our source: KTLA).
– 88% Land Control: The Conservancy owns and manages 88% of the island, giving them the authority to execute this plan across 48,000 acres (Our source: SEJ).
– 22,000+ Signatures: More than 22,000 people have signed petitions opposing the kill, showing that the public’s heart is not in this project (Our source: Deer Friendly).
– 379 vs. 1,000: In 2024, hunters were only able to kill 379 deer despite having 1,000 tags, leading the Conservancy to claim that manual hunting is a failure and that sharpshooters are now the only solution (Our source: GearJunkie).
Sharpshooters & Shadow Operations
The Caavakushi team has found a slight change in the strategy. After a massive public outcry in 2023 and 2024 against using helicopters to gun down the deer from the sky, the Conservancy shifted to ground-based specialists.
Starting in 2026, these paid contractors will use high-powered rifles, thermal imaging, and tracking dogs to hunt the deer day and night (Our source: Sportsmen’s Alliance). The Caavakushi team thinks it’s particularly grim that the carcasses are slated to be fed to California Condors. As if turning one sentient being into bird feed makes the animal cruelty any more palatable.
The Invasive Label Vs Reality
We found that the scientific justification for this move is highly debated. While the Conservancy claims the catalina island deer increase wildfire risk by eating native plants, the Los Angeles County Fire Chief warned that removing them could actually increase fuel loads as grasses grow unchecked (Our source: GearJunkie).
The Caavakushi team feels that the “invasive” label is being used as a weapon. Supervisor Janice Hahn summed it up perfectly when she stated the plan “disregards the deeply held values of many Catalina residents and visitors” who have cherished these animals for nearly a century (Our source: SFGATE).
Final Thoughts From The Caavakushi Team
We believe that conservation is often used as an excuse for violence. The Caavakushi team feels that true restoration should involve living with nature, not executing it. We think the Catalina island deer deserve a future, not a five-year death sentence.
The Caavakushi team wants to know: Do you believe invasive species have a right to life once they’ve integrated into an ecosystem for 100 years?
