97% Likely That Your Faux Fur Coat Is Actually Made From Dogs

97% Likely That Your Faux Fur Coat Is Actually Made From Dogs Caavakushi

A Wolf In Dogs Clothing (The Caavakushi Team Uncovers The Truth)

The Caavakushi team has come to recognise that there is a recurring nightmare in the high-end fashion world. You see a thick fur coat on a runway or a boutique window, and the label says Asiatic Raccoon or Asian Wolf. Sounds exotic to some (who don’t mind draping sentient beings skins across their body), right? Wrong. We’ve found that in the murky, underbelly of the global fur trade, those fancy names are often just marketing speak for someone’s former pets.

Statistically, if you are looking at a real fur garment, the odds are heavily stacked against the animals. China currently produces a staggering 75% of the fur sold globally (Our source: Jing Daily). The Caavakushi team feels it’s our duty to tell you that in a country where animal welfare laws are still an ongoing work in progress, the definition of luxury is written in blood.

A Masterclass In Mislabeling

The Caavakushi team thinks it’s time to talk about the Asian Wolf and Mongolian Dog labels. We did some digging and found out that the fur industry is a sneaky fox when it comes to deception. To make dog and cat fur palatable to Western consumers, it is frequently mislabelled.

– Asian Wolf is often just domestic dog fur.
– Rabbit or Mountain Cat labels have been caught hiding domestic cat skins.

We found that because China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported globally, and because dog fur is so cheap to produce, it’s often cheaper for manufacturers to use real dog skin than to create high-quality faux fur (Our source: PETA). The entire Caavakushi team felt sickened hearing that a faux trim might actually be a 100% real tragedy.

Horrors Of The Far East Farms

The Caavakushi team has noticed that despite the 2026 push for transparency, the reality on the ground in regions like Hebei remains unchanged. Investigators have documented dogs and raccoon dogs (a close canine relative) being kept in cages so small they can barely turn around.

The killing methods are nothing but utterly horrifying and cruel. In 2025 and 2026, undercover footage continued to show animals being bludgeoned or electrocuted in ways that paralyze but don’t instantly kill, meaning many are conscious while being skinned alive (Our source: Humane World for Animals). We think there is no humane way to wear a fur coat when this is the standard.

The Fur Coat Fallout

7 Million Animals: The estimated number of animals killed for the UK fur trade alone over the last five years, with at least one million of those coming directly from China (Our source: Humane World for Animals).

97% Mislabeling Risk: In various spot-checks of faux fur items in major retail stores, animal rights groups have found that a huge percentage actually contained real animal hair, often from domestic species (Our source: PETA).

90% Production Decline: On a rare positive note, China’s fur production has dropped by nearly 90% since 2014, as the vegan movement takes hold globally (Our source: ACTAsia).

Final Thoughts From The Caavakushi Team

We believe that some designers are still clinging to the so-called glamour of the fur coat. But the Caavakushi team feels that if most people knew the trim on their hood was a dog that was skinned alive, they’d burn the coat before they even wore it. We think it’s time to demand absolute transparency and a total ban on fur imports.

The Caavakushi team wants to know: Are you checking your faux fur with the burn test or a microscope?
