Animal Skins At The Bowling Alley
If you think the scariest thing at the bowling alley is the chance that you might stick your fingers into a bowling ball with a mysterious sticky substance inside, trust us when we say there is worse. But fear not because the Caavakushi team is here to educate you about the dark side of the bowling world. Our researchers have found that while most vegans are busy scrutinising the ingredients in a pack of salt and vinegar crisps, they’re literally unknowingly sliding around the lanes in animal skin bowling shoes. The fact that rental is often synonymous with slaughterhouse byproduct is a buzzkill we need to address.
The Caavakushi team feels that the bowling industry is at this point lagging behind the rest of the entertainment. While you can get a plant-based burger at almost any drive-thru now, finding bowling shoes that didn’t involve a cow being murdered is still a frustrating game of hide-and-seek.
So Are Bowling Shoes Vegan Friendly?
We’re here to tell you the truth and those multi-colored clowns on your feet aren’t just ugly—they’re often unethical. The Caavakushi team has come to realise that despite the global shift toward bio-leathers, the bowling industry remains stuck in a cycle of leather dependency.
85% Leather Rental Standard
We think it’s a horrific that the standard rental shoe today is still predominantly made from leather or coated leather. The team has noticed that while high-street fashion has moved to 90% PU leather based alternatives, commercial bowling shoes designed for durability often stick to animal hides because they can withstand the 1,000+ uses required for a rental lifecycle (Our source: No More Nobody 2026 Guide).
Cruel Chemistry Of Glue & Dyes
Even if you find a pair that looks like plastic, the Caavakushi team feels you need to look closer. Our researchers have found that the adhesives used to bond the sliding sole to the upper often contain animal-derived collagen. This is literally the boiled-down ligaments and tendons of various different animals. (Our source: The Vegan Society).
Furthermore, the vibrant house colours (reds and purples) on older rental stock can still occasionally utilize animal pigments like cochineal (aka crushed insects). After doing some further digging it came to our attention that the word natural doesn’t always mean vegan. The environmental toll is massive. Producing just 1m² of finished leather results in roughly 22.48kg CO2e in Global Warming Potential (Our source: Carbonfact 2025-2026 Report).
Final Thoughts From The Caavakushi Team
We think that fun shouldn’t require a footprint of suffering. Today brands like Dexter and Brunswick are finally introducing Lite and Mesh versions of bowling shoes that are 100% synthetic. But we’re sorry to tell you that unfortunately the default rental is still a minefield. Remember if you wouldn’t wear it to dinner, don’t wear it to the gutter. Contact your local bowling alley and find out if they provide plant-based & cruelty-free bowling shoes. Educate them on the facts and encourage them to do better.
