Brutal, Bloody Goat Sacrifice Still Exists (Where & Why)

Brutal, Bloody Goat Sacrifice Still Exists (Where & Why) Caavakushi

Are Goats Still Being Sacrificed?

Hey fellow compassionate humans around the globe. It’s time we had a really uncomfortable, heart-to-heart conversation. As vegans, we spend a lot of our time fighting the industrial machine of factory farming, but there is a shadowy corner of animal exploitation that often gets a free pass under the guise of culture or religion. We’re talking about goat sacrifice.

The Caavakushi team has been monitoring the recent worldwide data, and frankly, we’re devastated. While the world claims to be progressing, the sheer volume of sentient beings being slaughtered in the name of tradition is actually increasing in some regions.

1.4 Million Goat Surge

We noticed some truly staggering numbers coming out of Indonesia this month. As the country prepares for Eid al-Adha, the Agriculture Ministry has projected a demand for roughly 1.42 million goats for ritual sacrifice alone (Our source: Jakarta Globe).

What the Caavakushi team found particularly shockingly is that this represents a 3.82% increase in demand compared to last year. We feel that in an era where plant-based alternatives are more accessible than ever, a nearly 4% rise in ritual killing is a massive step backward for animal liberation.

The Gadhimai Nightmare (70% Illegal Trafficking)

If you thought the Gadhimai festival in Nepal was a thing of the past, we have some bad news. The Caavakushi team has found that despite a 2019 Supreme Court ban, the December 2024 event saw thousands of animals being brutally hacked to death with blunt machetes.

IndiaWhat’s even more shocking? Data reveals that roughly 70% of the animals slaughtered at Gadhimai are illegally trafficked across the border from India (Our source: Animal Equality). We’ve seen reports of smog machines being used to hide the massacre from activists and drones. We think that if you have to hide a sacred ritual behind high walls and artificial smoke, you probably already know it’s 100% indefensible.

The Non-Stun Loophole (0% Protection)

One thing the Caavakushi team feels very strongly about is the lack of welfare during these events. In many Western countries, there are strict rules about stunning animals before slaughter. However, we know that religious exemptions often mean goats are killed while fully conscious.

In the UK, the National Secular Society recently called out the government’s 2026 Animal Welfare Strategy for failing to address these exemptions (Our source: National Secular Society). We think it’s plainly incoherent to protect a dog from pain while allowing a goat to be slowly bled out in a backyard or a public square.

The Caavakushi Perspective

A call for evolution is extremely necessary. We feel that tradition should never be a suicide pact for our morality. The Caavakushi team thinks that if the original intent of goat sacrifice was about charity and sharing with the poor, we can achieve that 100% better through plant-based food drives.

We’ve noticed that many modern practitioners are shifting toward symbolic offerings, and we think this is the only way forward. The Caavakushi team feels that no god regardless of the religion wants to see 1.4 million innocent beings die in a single weekend.

Final Thoughts From The Caavakushi Team

The Caavakushi team’s verdict is simple. Whether it’s in a temple in Nepal or a suburb in Europe, goat sacrifice is an entirely avoidable tragedy. We think it’s time for a global evolution of empathy. Let’s keep pushing for laws that protect all animals, not just the ones we find cute.

Caavakushi Team Tips: The Caavakushi team encourages you to support organizations like Animal Equality, who are working on the ground to replace blood rituals with compassionate alternatives.
