Why Are Vegan & Cruelty-Free Labels Not Mandatory?
Real talk for a moment fellow herbivores. Have you ever stood in a high-street changing room, staring at a tiny, scratchy tag covered in cryptic symbols—a little rug, a diamond, a cows hide—feeling like you’re trying to crack the Da Vinci Code? The Caavakushi team has noticed that while we can scan a bag of crisps in three seconds to see if it’s plant-based but the fashion industry is still acting like it’s 1850 when it comes to vegan apparel.
We think it’s absolutely ludicrous that in 2026, the global vegan fashion market is projected to be worth a staggering $557.72 billion (Coherent Market Insights, 2026), yet the industry is still dragging its feet on mandatory vegan and cruelty-free labelling.
The Composition Con: 100% Sarcastic & 0% Transparent
The Caavakushi team feels that the current labeling laws are a joke. Most garments only have to list the main materials. But what about the glue? The dyes? The finishing agents? We’ve found out that brands love to hide behind the 100% Synthetic label, but they won’t tell you if that polyester was dyed with chemicals tested on rabbits.
According to recent findings, the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions—more than international flights and maritime shipping combined (The Sustainable Agency, 2026). If the industry is destroying the planet at that scale, the least they could do is give us a clear vegan apparel label so we don’t accidentally buy a pair of shoes held together by animal-bone glue. Don’t you think?
Why 57% Of Us Are Screaming For Change
We aren’t just being fussy vegans. New research suggests that 57% of UK consumers want fashion to be significantly more sustainable and transparent (Adopter.net, 2026 Statistics). We think that while the beauty industry has embraced cruelty-free as a standard, fashion treats it like a niche luxury.
The Caavakushi team thinks it should be mandatory for one simple reason: Accountability. In the EU, new anti-greenwashing rules (the ECGT Directive) are finally set to punish brands for vague claims like “eco-friendly” or “responsible” starting in September 2026 (GreenStitch, 2026). We feel this is the perfect time to push for a legal requirement for vegan apparel tags. If you can’t prove it’s vegan, you shouldn’t be allowed to profit from our ethics.
The Fashion Industry’s “Dog Ate My Homework” Excuses
Whenever we ask why labelling isn’t mandatory, the industry cries about “complex supply chains.” Oh, please. If a brand can track a single sequin from a factory in East Asia to a shop in London to ensure it’s the right shade of Millennial Pink, they can track whether their glue is animal-free.
The Caavakushi team have seen that footwear alone is expected to account for 36.7% of the vegan fashion market share this year (Coherent Market Insights). That is a massive chunk of money! We think it’s time to stop letting them take our cash while keeping us in the dark.
The Caavakushi Teams Manifesto
We feel that the only way to fix the world of fashion is to force their hand. We want labels that clearly state “VEGAN” in bold, verified by a third party. No more guesswork. No more “maybe it’s synthetic.” Just 100% honesty would be great.
We’ve noticed that when things are mandatory, companies magically find a way to comply. Until then, we’ll keep our magnifying glasses out and our voices loud. Because if a truly sustainable brand can’t even tell me if a sheep suffered for my sweater, is it really sustainable? We think not.
Caavakushi Team Tip: Always check for independent certifications like the PETA-Approved Vegan logo or The Vegan Society logo when shopping for vegan apparel. This guarantees that it is definitely vegan.
