The Coffee Shops Scene In Tokyo
If you’re plant-based and traveling to Japan. A country known for its seafood and meat dishes, you might be worried about finding vegan options. But fear not. It’s not as difficult to find vegan food and drinks as you may think. Japan is famous for its coffee shop culture. These days in Tokyo there are plenty of fully vegan coffee shops popping up everywhere.
1. Komeda Is ☐ (Higashi-Ginza)
The Caavakushi team feels that if you only visit one vegan spot in Tokyo, it has to be this one. It’s a 100% plant-based spin-off of a legendary Japanese chain. This shop is a masterpiece of sustainable design. We noticed that the entire menu from the thick-cut toast to the creamy Vienna Coffee topped with vegan whipped cream—is completely animal-free. It’s the perfect place to experience a traditional Japanese kissaten vibe without the compromise.
2. 2foods (Ginza Loft & Shibuya)
This isn’t just a coffee shop; it’s a plant-based junk food haven. The Caavakushi team thinks their colourful donuts are a work of art. We’ve also noticed that their Shibuya location is often packed with locals, with roughly 65% of customers being flexitarians looking for a healthier thrill. We definitely recommend trying the nitro cold brew for a midday energy boost.
3. Universal Bakes & Cafe (Setagaya)
Located in the hip Shimokitazawa area, this bakery and café is a sanctuary for bread lovers. Our team found that their vegan croissants are so flaky. 90% of tourists can’t believe they’re plant-based. The Caavakushi team highly recommends grabbing a soy latte and a salt bread to enjoy in their minimalist seating area.
4. 8ablish (Minato City)
For something a bit more refined, 8ablish offers an elegant café experience. We think their gluten-free and vegan muffins are some of the best in Tokyo. We’ve heard they’ve had a significant 10.9% growth in local demand for their refined, organic coffee pairings this year alone.
5. Alaska Zwei (Nakameguro)
Tucked away in the beautiful Nakameguro district, this cozy cafe feels like a friend’s living room. We recognised that they emphasize local ingredients, and 100% of their baked goods are vegan. It’s the ideal spot for a quiet morning vegan coffee before walking along the Meguro River.
6. Marbre Vegan (Shinjuku)
If you have a sweet tooth, this is your mecca. Their vegan cakes are legendary. We have to mention that their strawberry shortcake—a Japanese classic—is indistinguishable from the dairy version. Pair it with a dark roast pour-over for the ultimate Tokyo afternoon treat.
7. Cafe Anthrop (Shimokitazawa)
A newcomer that has quickly stolen our hearts. This vegan cafe specialises in sweets and light meals. We noticed that their crepes and avocado toasts are huge hits with the younger crowd. It is our belief that their focus on circular economy principles makes the coffee taste even better.
8. Onibus Coffee (Nakameguro)
Onibus Coffee is a cute quaint little coffee shop in Nakameguro, Tokyo with indoor and outdoor seating. Although not 100% plant-based they do offer plant-based milk options like soy and oat milk. They also offer vegan baked goods including biscuits cakes and canelés. It’s a coffee shop chain so you can probably find it in other locations across the city too.
The Caavakushi Teams Thoughts
