Why Go DIY? Because Beeswax Is Boring, Darling!
The Caavakushi team has previously told you why most of those tubes lined up at the pharmacy checkout are packed with non-vegan oddities—we’re talking sheep grease (lanolin) and, yes, the dreaded beeswax. Why settle for those horrific non-plant-based options when you can create a far superior, 100% ethical, and customizable vegan lip balm recipe in your own kitchen?
The truth is, making your own lip balm is hilariously simple, incredibly fast, and gives you total ingredient control. It’s a complete game-changer, and it shows that vegan life isn’t about missing out; it’s about making better stuff.
We’re here to give you the ultimate DIY homemade vegan lip balm recipe that relies on three powerful plant-based ingredients. Get ready to have the smoothest, guilt-free lips on the planet!
The Holy Trinity Of Vegan Lip Care
Every great lip balm needs three things: something hard (the wax), something creamy (the butter), and something deeply moisturising (the oil). Here are the superstars of our recipe:
1. Wax Warrior (Candelilla Wax)
Let’s just forget about beeswax altogether—we’re using Candelilla wax! This incredible plant-derived wax, sourced from the leaves of the Candelilla shrub, provides the perfect structure.
In fact Candelilla wax has a high oil-binding capacity and is generally less sticky than beeswax, giving your finished balm a silkier, smoother feel. It’s what gives your balm the necessary hardness to survive in a pocket or handbag without turning into a puddle.
2. Creamy Dream (Cocoa Butter)
If you want your lips to smell amazing (like a fancy dessert you didn’t actually eat), you need cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants. It doesn’t just sit on the surface; it provides a deep, protective, and velvety barrier that keeps moisture locked in. It’s a non-negotiable for repairing cracked or chapped lips, making it a foundation of any truly restorative Lip Balm.
3. Liquid Gold (Coconut Oil)
Ah, coconut oil. Our favorite multitasker! We are choosing refined coconut oil here for two reasons: deep moisture and its lower cost. It melts beautifully with the wax and butter and is packed with fatty acids that nourish the skin.
The Caavakushi Team’s Simple 3 Ingredient Vegan Lip Balm Recipe
This recipe uses a simple ratio that can be easily adjusted based on how firm you want your final lip balm to be. If you live somewhere hot, add a little extra wax!
Ingredients
– 4g Candelilla Wax Flakes (For structure)
– 7g Cocoa Butter (For creaminess & scent)
– 10g Coconut Oil (For moisture)
– Optional: 5-10 drops of Vitamin E oil (A powerful antioxidant booster that also helps preserve the oils)
Instructions
– Combine the Candelilla Wax, Cocoa Butter, and Coconut Oil in a small, heat-safe glass jar or bowl. The best method is to create a double boiler setup (a fancy term for placing the bowl over a small pot of simmering water). This ensures the ingredients melt gently and evenly without scorching.
– Stir the mixture frequently until all the wax flakes are completely melted and the liquid is clear and uniform. This should only take about five to ten minutes.
– Carefully remove the jar from the heat. This is your moment! Slowly and steadily pour the hot liquid mixture into clean, empty Lip Balm tubes or small tins. Do this quickly, as the plant waxes solidify faster than beeswax!
– Leave the balms to cool completely on the counter for at least two hours (or speed it up with a quick 30-minute chill in the fridge). Once the tops are completely solidified and matte, they are ready to cap, label, and use!
See? No sheep were harmed. No bugs were crushed. Just pure, simple, DIY homemade vegan lip balm perfection. Now all that’s left to do is go stock up on plant waxes!
